Barlow, D.H., & Hersen, M. (1984). Single-case
experimental designs: Strategies for studying behavior change
(2nd ed.). Elmsford, NY: Pergamon.
A good "how-to" manual, which also covers the
N=1 vs. control-group and generalizability concerns raised in
yesterday's thread.
Bloom, M., Fischer, J. & Orme, J. G. (1995). Evaluating
Practice: Guidelines for The Accountable Professional.
Boston: Allyn & Bacon. (800) 827-6364.
There are many such offerings but this is about the best
in terms of comprehensive coverage of the topic. It has become
something of a classic in practice evaluation technology.
Fischer, J. & Corcoran, K. (1994). Measures for
Clinical Practice. (2nd Ed.) New York: The Free
Press.
This is a comprehensive two-volume listing of
measurement scales for use in practice and research. A must
for your work desk!

Johnson, J. M. & Pennypacker, H. S. (1980). Strategies
and Tactics of Human Behavioral Research. Hillsdale,
NJ: Lawrence Erlbaum Assoc., 1980.
This is a major text that provides instruction on the
misuse of language and philosophy in science, single-case
experimental designs, and the conduct of idiographic
behavioral research.

Assessment for Social Workers: Quantitative and Qualitative
Methods. Chicago: Lyceum Press.
A new offering covering assessment methods and
measurement tools and strategies.
Kazdin, A. E. (1982). Single-Case Research Designs;
Methods for Clinical and Applied Settings. New York:
Oxford University Press.
An exceptional text for those who want a brief yet
comprehensive introduction to this topic. It is very likely an
indispensable tool for those who are involved with clinical
assessment and evaluation.
Kratochwill, T.R., & Levin, J.R. (Eds.). (1992). Single-case
research design and analysis: New directions for psychology
and education. Hillsdale, NJ: Erlbaum.
A recent collection of nine pertinent discussions
regarding N=1 issues.

comparison and single case design methods for evaluating
interventions used in social work practice: A methodological
study. Dissertation, 1986, Florida State University,
printed by University Micofilms, Ann Arbor, MI.
This is an outstanding methodological contribution which
lays a solid foundation for merging the methods of nomothetic
and idiographic research as these relate to clinical science,
practice evaluation, and program evaluation.

Nurius, P. S. & Hudson, W. W. (1993). Human
Services Practice, Evaluation & Computers.
Pacific Grove, CA: Brooks/Cole Publishing Co.
This book lays down in a single source a solid foundation for
the basic study and implementation of what we call Empirical
Social Work Practice. Although we recommend you read the
entire book, we call special attention to several portions.
Chapters 5 & 6 provide unique introductions to design
issues that are related the actual doing of practice --
special emphasis is given to issues of clinical reasoning.
Chapters 7-10 give you a solid introduction to the use of
measurement in practice. Once you have a firm grasp on dealing
with measurement, assessment, and evaluation on a case-by-case
basis you will discover that Chapters 11 & 12 will give
you a foundation for conducting program evaluations using
outcome measures. Just click on Brooks/Cole to order the book.
